Relief & Recovery Programme

Not every charity responds to a disaster in the same way. Some provide medical assistance, some shelter, some food and water. Others will be more focused on either short term or long term rebuilding efforts.

The Clown Doctors New Zealand’s contribution in the time immediately after the earthquakes in September 2009 and February 2010 was well received by approximately 5,600 people.

Their silly interactions gave people ‘permission to laugh’ at a time and place when they were not able to do so  and it has truly made a difference to the community’s morale. We aim to relieve tension and create an atmosphere of hope among the grief and sadness of post-earthquake Christchurch.

A few of our internationally experienced Clown Doctors, proudly represent New Zealand as the Clown Doctors Worldwide Relief & Recovery Team (CDW), a charitable initiative for education and operations in disaster zones, run by the International Institute for Medical Clowning based in Christchurch (but affiliated with Steinbeis University Berlin) and Red Noses International 'Crisis Intervention Team'.

The aim of the CDW is to mobilise international teams, assess the situation and problems that need to be addressed and develop effective solutions. This includes intensive training, cooperation and coordination with several high profiled organizations (e.g. UNICEF, Red Cross, World Vision, RNI, Clowns Without Borders).
